People with diabetes are prone to having foot problems, often because of two complications of the disease: nerve damage called neuropathy and poor circulation. Simple problems can turn into serious complications for the diabetic foot. Neuropathy causes loss of feeling in the feet which removes the ability to detect injury or irritation to the feet. Poor circulation reduces the foots ability to heal, which can make it more susceptible to infection. As a result of these complications the following can result: infections and ulcers that do not heal, corns and calluses caused by undetected pressure, dry cracked skin caused by poor circulation, nail disorders like ingrown toenails and fungus can quickly lead to infections if left untreated, hammertoe and bunion deformities caused by nerve damage affecting muscles of the foot which can further lead to ulcers of the foot, and a Charcot foot which is a complex foot deformity caused by a loss of sensation and undetected broken bone that leads to destruction of the soft tissue of the foot. This disabling condition can become so severe that surgery, and even amputation may become necessary. These patients are at high risk for infection and limb loss are require close monitoring and comprehensive care. Prevention is key for maintaining health in the diabetic foot. This involves regular office visits to a patient’s primary care physician and podiatrist are critical, healthy diet, proper shoe gear and daily foot inspections are key elements of reducing the risk of diabetic foot problems.
